We’re excited to harness the new ISO Standard to operationalise natural capital reporting for organisations.
ISO 14054 outlines the principles, requirements and guidance for measuring, valuing and accounting for interactions with nature.
ISO 14054 will make it easier for organisations to report on their impacts and dependencies on nature.
Published in October 2025, ISO 14054 explains how organisations can:
- prepare natural capital accounts using structured reports and schedules
- combine financial, environmental and socio-economic information
- show how organisations depend on and impact natural systems.
The relationship between ISO 14054 and the SEEA
ISO 14054 was built to complement the international statistical standard, the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA).
The SEEA remains the global reference for environmental-economic accounting, especially for natural capital accounts implemented by governments. The new standard adds an ‘organisational wrapper’ to make natural capital accounting more straight-forward.
ISO 14054 provides guidelines aligned with the SEEA’s principles and treatments that support organisations to develop natural capital accounts. ISO 14054 standardises:
- how organisations can develop and manage natural capital accounts
- the statements and schedules organisations can present
- the assumptions, gaps and limitations that organisations must explain.
It’s fantastic to see how well ISO 14054 works with the SEEA. And it’s exciting to have another tool to support organisations develop natural capital accounts as the momentum grows globally.
Please get in touch at any time to discuss ISO 14054, the SEEA or your natural capital journey more broadly.
