Bord na Mona is an Irish public corporation operating six business units: Powergen, Biomass, Resource Recovery, Peat, Horticulture, and Fuels.
IDEEA Group worked with Bord Na Mona to build capacity in natural capital accounting and the development of natural capital accounts. This work supported Bord Na Mona’s move to finish production of peat for electricity within the Irish government’s wider decarbonisation agenda. The work involved fine-scale mapping of peat bogs in various parts of Ireland and connecting spatial data to measures of changes in condition associated with bog rehabilitation.
The organisation of detailed ecological data with an accounting setting was critical and this allowed a connection to be made to economic consequences of the ending of peat production to be considered.
