Senior Economist – Natural Capital & Environmental Accounting
About the role
We are seeking a senior-level economist to work with our clients on complex natural capital and environmental analysis challenges. This role combines technical economic expertise, project delivery, and client engagement, and will play a key role in designing and delivering innovative natural capital accounting and policy solutions.
You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team and with clients across government and industry, contributing to high-quality analytical outputs, clear reporting, and practical decision-ready insights.
This is a full-time, hybrid role.
Key responsibilities
Client delivery and advisory
- Work directly with clients to understand their natural capital challenges and co-design fit-for-purpose solutions.
- Provide economic advice and policy analysis to support decision-making in areas such as natural capital accounting, environmental management, and sustainability.
- Participate in stakeholder engagement activities, including one-on-one meetings, small group discussions and large workshops.
Technical analysis
- Interpret environmental models and data sets and use economic theory and applied methods to build environmental-economic and natural capital accounts.
- Collate, manage and analyse large and complex spatial datasets, including environmental, economic, financial and firm-level data.
- Translate data and analysis into clear insights that inform policy, investment and program design.
Reporting and communication
- Draft high-quality, well-structured and insightful reports and briefing materials for clients.
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
Project delivery
- Manage and contribute to projects from inception through to delivery, including planning, execution and coordination with internal team members.
- Work effectively as a self-starter, managing priorities and workloads with minimal supervision.
Team contribution
- Collaborate closely with colleagues to deliver high-quality outcomes for clients.
- Contribute positively to a supportive, professional and collegiate team culture.
Skills and experience
Essential
- Degree or postgraduate qualification in economics (or a closely related field).
- Demonstrated project management experience.
- Strong applied economic analysis skills.
- Experience working with spatial data, including large and complex datasets.
- Excellent written communication skills, with a proven ability to produce clear and high-quality reports.
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience engaging with stakeholders.
Desirable
- Experience in natural capital, environmental economics, sustainability, or environmental-economic accounting.
- Experience working with government or public-sector clients.
- Familiarity with environmental sciences and related measurement and analysis
- Familiarity with environmental, financial or economic reporting frameworks.
Other requirements
- This is a senior role with a high level of responsibility and autonomy.
- Preferably based in Melbourne.
- Willingness to travel overseas as required.
