A recent article in Science Magazine suggested that the term “ecosystem services” had become inappropriate and needed to be reconsidered, in part to better incorporate cultural values.
While we agree that cultural values and perspectives are very relevant and important, for a range of reasons we do not support the position taken in the article.
We have joined many leading experts in ecosystem services in replying to the article (see Letter to Science Magazine authored by Rudolf de Groot and Editorial in Ecosystem Services in ScienceDirect) and will continue to seek to engage all involved to ensure our focus is on spreading the word on natural capital.
