A sustainable ocean economy is central to building a better future for people and the planet.
In light of this, we are delighted to share an important report with you titled Defining a Complete Sequence of National Ocean Accounts, prepared in 2021 for the then Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment.
The report discusses:
- The commitment of the Australian Government to a range of priority actions as a member of the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (Ocean Panel).
- How human wellbeing and economic prosperity depend on healthy oceans.
- How ocean accounts provide a framework for data integration enabling the measurement and management of oceans.
- The design of a sequence of ocean accounts.
Written by the IDEEA Group team, including Carl Obst, Mark Eigenraam, Reiss McLeod and Daniel Whitaker, and with input from Dr Michael Vardon (ANU), this is a foundational document for use in natural capital accounting for Australia’s oceans. The work was supported by Crystal Bradley and Eszter Szabo from the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment and Jonathon Khoo and Peter Meadows from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
